Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D CRT) is a cancer treatment that utilizes 3D imaging scans to develop individualized cancer treatment for each patient. By incorporating 3D imaging scans, 3D CRT is able to target tumors with conformal doses of radiation, reducing the risk of damaging the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor.
Whereas in the past, radiation treatments only matched the general size of a tumor, 3D CRT can shape radiation beams to match the shape of the tumor. This allows for the safer usage of higher levels of radiation for cancer treatment. With 3D imaging scan technology, radiation oncologists can bypass the traditional method of using lower doses of radiation in the general area where a tumor resides – which can risk damaging healthy tissues – and instead use a higher level in a precision strike that more effectively shrinks and kills tumors. Outside diagnostic imaging can be fused with our CT planning.
